Transmission Repair

Transmission complaints get expensive fast when the wrong repair is chosen. We separate clutch, shift actuation, air supply and internal wear before quoting so you are not paying for an overhaul that a calibration would have fixed.

Transmission Repair in Baltimore, MD

A truck that will not take a gear is not automatically a transmission that needs to come out. On automated manual boxes the same complaint can come from a clutch actuator, a low air supply, a failed shift sensor, or software that is out of date. On manuals it can be a worn clutch brake or a linkage adjustment. We start by proving which of those it is, because pulling a heavy transmission is a long day and it should only happen when the fault is genuinely inside the case.

Equipment and capability

The shop is set up for full transmission removal with pit access, transmission jacks rated for heavy duty units, and clean bench space for teardown and inspection. We hold licences for the shift calibration procedures on the automated manual platforms we service, which matters because several of them will not operate correctly after a component change until the learn routine is run.

What transmission repair covers

The full scope of the work, so there is no ambiguity about what is and is not included when you approve a job.

  • Diagnosis on Eaton Fuller Advantage and Endurant, Volvo I-Shift, Detroit DT12 and Allison automatics
  • Clutch replacement, clutch brake service and self adjusting clutch inspection
  • Automated manual clutch actuator testing, replacement and calibration
  • Shift sensor, inertia brake and air supply fault diagnosis
  • Transmission software updates and calibration after component replacement
  • Manual gearbox linkage adjustment, shift tower rebuild and air shift repair
  • Allison automatic fluid and filter service, solenoid and valve body work
  • Full transmission removal, teardown, inspection and overhaul with new bearings and synchros
  • Reman transmission supply and installation when an overhaul is not economical
  • Driveline inspection, u-joint, centre bearing and driveshaft balance work
  • Rear differential and carrier inspection where the noise is not actually the transmission
  • Road test under load before the truck is released

When you need this service

If you recognise any of these, it is worth a call before it becomes a roadside call.

Transmission will not take a gear, or drops out of gear under load

Grinding on shifts, or a crunch going into a specific gear

Automated manual is slow to shift, holds gears too long or flashes a gear warning

Clutch pedal feels soft, sits high, or the truck creeps with the pedal down

Whine or growl that changes with road speed rather than engine speed

Vibration through the floor that appears above a certain speed

Fluid leak at the bell housing, output shaft or pan

Burning smell after a hill or after heavy stop and go on the Beltway

How we approach it

The sequence matters as much as the repair. Working through it in this order is what stops you paying for parts the fault never pointed at.

  1. 1

    Confirm the complaint

We drive the truck where it is safe to, or run it on the shop floor, and reproduce the exact condition the driver reported. A description of a noise is not a diagnosis.

  2. 2

Rule out the cheap causes first

Air supply, clutch adjustment, actuator function, fluid level and condition, and software revision. A surprising number of shift complaints end here.

  3. 3

    Scan and test the driveline

We pull transmission and driveline codes, check sensor output, and inspect u-joints, centre bearings and mounts, because driveline vibration is regularly reported as a transmission fault.

  4. 4

    Quote the options

Where more than one path exists, we quote them side by side: repair in place, overhaul, or a reman unit with warranty. You see the cost and the realistic life expectancy of each.

  5. 5

    Repair, calibrate and road test

After the work we complete any required calibration or learn procedure and road test under load before the truck goes back to you.

Transmission Repair questions

Drawn from the questions we get asked most about this specific service.

Often, yes. Clutch actuators, shift sensors, air supply faults, linkage adjustment and software issues are all fixed in place. Internal wear, bearing failure and synchro damage mean the unit comes out.

The short version: a clutch problem usually shows up as slipping under load, a high or soft pedal, or trouble getting into gear from a stop. A transmission problem more often shows as noise in specific gears or dropping out of gear. We confirm which it is before quoting.

Yes. Allison automatics, Eaton Fuller Advantage and Endurant, Volvo I-Shift, Detroit DT12 and traditional Eaton manuals are all in scope.

It depends on downtime and warranty. A reman unit usually gets you back on the road sooner and carries a longer warranty. An overhaul can be cheaper if the case and gear train are in good condition. We quote both so the numbers are in front of you.

Clutch actuator or sensor work is usually same day. A clutch replacement is typically one to two days. A full overhaul or a reman swap runs three to five working days depending on parts availability.

Not necessarily, but do not ignore it. Cold shift complaints often trace to fluid condition or an actuator that is starting to fail. It is much cheaper to catch it at that stage than after it strands you.
